Spotify confirmed today it has begun to roll out support for standalone streaming on its Apple Watch app. The feature had been spotted in testing back in September, and arrives roughly two years. Previously, the Spotify app on the Apple Watch could only control the Spotify app on a user's iPhone. However, this beta allows LTE users the ability to take their music on the go while leaving. The Spotify app for Apple Watch lets you stream Spotify directly from your wrist (Spotify Premium and Apple Watch Series 3 or later required), use your voice to. Spotify brought its app to the Apple Watch all the way back in November 2018, but in the two years since, the only way to actually use the app has been to carry around your iPhone with you as well.
The problem with the Apple Watch is that it typically relies on users to pair the smartwatch with an iPhone. The cellular version of the Apple Watch does reduce its dependence on the iPhone, but when it comes to third-party apps, it’s a bit of a mixed bag as it’s up to the developer to choose to create a standalone app designed for the Apple Watch.

The good news for Spotify users is that if you’d rather not have to bring your iPhone with you on your run, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since released a standalone app for the Apple Watch. What this means that users will be able to stream music from Spotify through the Apple Watch app directly to their headphones as long as the user has some kind of connection, such as WiFi or cellular data.
According to Spotify, they’ve recently started to roll out this update to its users, so if you haven’t received the update yet, not to worry as it should eventually make its way to you. The company had actually started to test the feature earlier this year, but it looks like they are more or less done and are making it available to more users as we speak.
So if you can appreciate being able to stream your favorite music or podcasts without having to rely on being in proximity to your iPhone, then this is an update that you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

Spotify officially released its Apple Watch app on Nov 13, 2018. With this new app, users can enjoy an improved experience with better control and the ability to seamlessly connect to your speakers or devices.
Spotify’s first Apple Watch version includes the ability to access and control your favorite Spotify music and podcasts from wrist, and control how music is played to compatible Spotify Connect devices. But one important feature is missing: you can't store Spotify music locally on your wrist for offline listening.
The lack of offline playback may disappoint you. It means you still can't go for a run with just Bluetooth headphones and leave iPhone at home. Spotify is promising that offline playback support is coming in the future, however, it's not achieved. Unfortunately, it's a similar story for Apple Watch LTE owners with a data contract who were hoping to stream Spotify music directly from their wrist for listening on a pair of connected Bluetooth headphones. Currently the ability to do this doesn't exist in the Spotify app and there's a good chance it never will, since Apple's API for watchOS 5 doesn't permit third-party apps to use direct cellular or Wi-Fi streaming.
